IS Your Home Holiday – Ready?

December 11, 2025

The festive season is almost here! But, before diving into that Christmas Jollof, carols singing and family time or pure relaxation, it’s essential to ensure your property is ready for the holidays. With everyone focused on festivities, getting help for repairs or issues might be difficult. Imagine dealing with a leaky sink or broken air conditioner because you didn’t prepare beforehand. Even worse, your trusted handyman is with his family, and your repairs are put on hold until after the holidays. Not the merry season you envisioned, right?

Whether you’re staying home or travelling, having a stress-free holiday is everyone’s goal. A little preparation now can save you stress later. Here’s a checklist to help you avoid last-minute hiccups and enjoy a safe and merry break.

  1. Don’t Wait on Repairs—The Handyman Won’t Be Waiting Either

The festive season isn’t just for you; it’s also a time for your trusted handyman to take a break. Most artisans prioritize family over fixes during this period, meaning, that dripping tap or flickering bulb you ignored could escalate into a full problem with no one available to fix it. And if you do find help, be ready to pay premium fees for emergency services. So, fix all locks, repair minor issues and replace the burnt-out bulbs now, before your handyman goes back to his village for Christmas!

  1. Clean and Declutter

Nothing beats coming back to a clean home, whether it’s after a trip or a long festive day. Start the new year by discarding items you no longer need. If you’re travelling, get rid of perishable food to avoid unpleasant surprises. That’s the last thing you want to deal with. Clear out the trash to avoid attracting pests. Fix all those temperamental plumbing issues before the guests arrive, Trust us, your future self with thank you!

  1. Prepare for power outages

And whether it’s dumsor or NEPA, power outages during the holidays can be a mood killer. Make sure you have your back covered with that backup generator and extra fuel. That party can’t stop mid-way. It will be terrible to have all the fun end before it starts. If you don’t have those, just prepare for unexpected power cuts by getting your rechargeable lamps and power banks fully charged and replacing the batteries in the torchlights- we can’t be off the grid – It’s Christmas! And make sure to protect your appliances from sudden power surges.

A blackout shouldn’t stop the party - plan ahead to keep the lights (and fun) on!

  1. Be Energy Efficient

Nobody wants to be left with a huge utility bill to pay after the holidays, but we want to enjoy it too, right? So, unplug all appliances when they are not in use to reduce phantom energy consumption. Use energy-efficient devices and LED holiday lights to keep your home festive without breaking the bank. Also, plug smart and set timers on lights and decorations to balance ambience and savings.

  1. Safety first, Festivities Second

With all the extra holiday cooking, lighting, and partying, your home safety systems need to be in good shape. Test your smoke detectors to make sure they’re ready to handle all the extra kitchen action. Make sure you have a fire extinguisher nearby too (and make sure you know how to use it!). Also, avoid cramming all your lights into one outlet like you’re stuffing up the chicken, spread the load and keep it safe. Be mindful of the firecrackers (knockouts); remember to fire them away from your priced possessions to avoid any accidents. And don’t forget to keep them out of reach of the children!

  1. Set Up a Holiday Ambiance

Finally, don’t forget to sprinkle some holiday cheer around your home with safe and festive décor. Twinkling lights are a holiday essential, but a little TLC goes a long way in keeping them safe and sparkly. Decorate Safely by using LED lights and avoid overloading electrical outlets.

Bonus Tip: If you’re travelling, inform a trusted neighbour or a friend. A friendly eye on your property could make all the difference!

So, whether you're celebrating Christmas in Accra, Lagos, Banjul, or beyond, a little preparation can go a long way in ensuring a relaxing and worry-free holiday. Don’t leave important fixes until it’s too late! Schedule your repairs now and take time to tick off this checklist now, so you can relax and truly enjoy the holidays.
